Unique work from a series executed in 1981, silkscreen on cotton t-shirt (very large, over-sized, size 'XL').
This work comes directly from the Estate of Andy Warhol and was in the artist's possession upon his passing.
The work features the word 'Art' predominantly, and also mentions the 'Area' nightclub in the smaller text below.
The Area nightclub was located at 157 Hudson Street in Manhattan (NYC), between 1983-1987, and was a hot spot for celebrities and luminaries of the New York art scene. The club was known for it's unusual invitations and changing themes.
From it's inception, the club became known for it's creative invitations. 5,000 invitations were sent in capsules for the September 1983 opening. They sent champagne-bottle crackers for New Year's Eve, hollowed-out eggs for Natural History, and black handkerchiefs for Halloween.
Area attracted many celebrities such as Grace Jones, Jean-Michel Basquiat and ofcourse, Andy Warhol - there are several mentions of Area in The Andy Warhol Diaries.
Initialled (inside, lower edge) by Ted Hughes, the executor of Andy Warhol's estate and with the 'Estate of Andy Warhol 'and 'The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.' ink stamps.
This work was produced with the same screens used for Warhol's 'Art' paintings.
An immaculate example, archivally stored since being acquired from the Estate of Andy Warhol.
